In 1888 south-west Sheffield was enjoying a housing boom, with many suburban homes being built for the middle classes. Leafy streets and respectable gardens appealed to those who longed to live in the country but had to work in the city. Many of the rooms in these properties were graced by splendid, intricate floor tiling that was a feature of most Victorian homes, and it was this look that Nora asked us to recreate in her hallway. This small hall was completed in a day. The house is a stone built terrace around the corner from Sheffield University. I had to take up layers of carpet, underlay, linoleum, hardboard and waxcloth flooring before I finally got down to the floorboards which were in perfect condition. It was almost a shame to cover them over again.
